First Indian Comic Con Fest

The Indian Comic Con fest, the first of its kind held at Dilli Haat on the 19th and 20th of February was truly an eye-candy, bringing in people of different age groups and from different walks of life. The perpetual flow of the crowd venturing into the different book stalls clearly indicated that COMICS is still an amazing form of entertainment. The entire event saw some bigwigs from both the comics and animation industry, displaying their creative prowess in the form of short animation films, Graphic novels and comics, while new start-ups like Manta Ray and Level-10 comics were busy displaying their very best works of art and writing that drew people of different age groups. Comic book enthusiasts dressed as popular vigilantes and villains caught the attention of the people. A couple of Rorscachs and Scarecrows, characters appearing in the Watchmen and Batman comic books respectively were busy dilly dallying from one stall to another, leaving some of the non-comic book enthusiasts wonder, who they were? A few clicks with the men in masks had kids and adults wanting to take more. Joker with a Heath Ledger feel was quite conspicuous at the event. A student of IIT dressed in that outfit paid his sincere tribute to the legendary Ledger and did a few takes on him as well, like, "Why so Serious?" While there was this young college kid dressed like the First Avenger, Captain America, minus the shield, his costume appeared as if he had ripped off the airbags of his car to create it. I had no problems dressing up like a vigilante, since I didn't have to run around looking for a costume. My choice of interest was, THE GREEN HORNET. My marriage suit came pretty handy and so did my old muffler in which I created two holes which eventually became my dominos mask and of course I purchased a fedora cap from the nearby shop. I also managed to find Kato, sidekick of GH, a North-East college kid who offered me his support. You can view the photos right below.

MANTRI: Politician turned superhero. This character was designed by me, last year. The script is done and I'm very keen to have it as a one-shot comic book. This is just a rough-proposed character design. Though I'm not yet ready with the other characters (Illustrations), this superhero is going to be completely different.

Lazy Bones

Let sleeping dogs lie.
Lazy bones during winters enjoy basking in the sun,especially with nothing else to do except a few woof-woofs that clearly convey, Do not disturb. And as I wandered through the different streets of Delhi from CP to Chandini Chowk with my 'CLICKOFANTOVISUALLA'(Look at my profile for the term), I found something unusual about all these mongrels. They were all cuddled in a similar fashion and were enjoying the siesta which ofcourse a retired man with no liabilities or a......???? would enjoy. This gave me a wonderful opportunity to capture their moods amidst the perpetual mayhem of the crowd. I must have clicked around 50 photographs and the ones displayed below are the best from my album.

Does the Pigeon get its perks?

These photos that I clicked early this morning has something to convey...something about life and the choices we make. After spending a few hours on my apartment's terrace, while I was going down the stairs, I noticed this pigeon standing tall and confident on the two platters, one big and the other small. Fortunately I had my camera hung around me neck that gave me an opportunity to click. The first click relates to the choices we make, both personally and professionally. The pigeon in the first click has a choice to make, whether it's the big platter or the small one. Finally she settles for the bigger one in click two and eventually feeds on the seeds in the bigger platter, as shown on click three. What actually caught my attention was the time that the pigeon actually spent (roughly around five minutes) looking at a particular direction,probably pondering over the choice she had made. Generally a pigeon, once done with its meal takes off instantly, irrespective of any kind of interference. But here the pigeon kept pondering at something even after it was done. Had the pigeon taken off instantly, it would have clearly indicated that it was satisfied...but what is it that made it wait so long? We, like the pigeon too make choices and ponder till we realize our follies and foibles . The bigger need not always be the better one...it's all about how we choose life, both professionaly and personally.

For the past two months Delhi has been receiving unexpected heavy rainfall, recorded a maximum, since 1978. I've been clicking images of Delhi's very own sorrow,'The Yamuna river' that has been flowing into some parts of the city. While I managed to click with my Canon EOS D-SLR 500 , a plethora of visuals on Delhi's stint with the monsoon, the photo of an eagle cruising through the overcast sky, at the backdrop, just a few minutes before a downpour, caught my attention. Hope you guys like the take, as it reminds me of the DARK KNIGHT flying over Gotham while the BAT-SIGNAL lights up the sky with the symbol of the bat at the backdrop.

ULTA (Useless Little Things for Art) is a form of art where a caricature/sculpture of a prominent personality can be created using spare parts of automobiles or anything that has become useless. Anything that is electronically or mechanically termed useless means a lot to creativity. Try giving it a closer look, it could transform into something unimaginable. A tiny useless spark plug of a car can be transformed into a scary looking alligator. The one that my blog contains is a portrait/caricature of myself using a useless set of car speakers from my Maruti Alto and the rollers of the sliding door of a Maruti Van. Fortunately the speakers had a magnetic finish at the bottom allowing the rest of the items to get adhered to it. The owner of a car service center who has a gargantuan collection of useless spare parts has promised to donate some to me.

On my recent trip to South, I managed to capture this fantastic feline in deep slumber. It was in the evening when my bi-spectacled pair noticed it cuddled in a corner on the top of a cardboard box. As I clicked in continuity,disturbed by the flash of the camera, she woke up instantly and stared at me for about a minute, forcing me to exit .

In my recent trip down South, I had the golden opportunity of visiting some of the oldest temples and remotest villages of Tamil Nadu. With my Canon D-500 'eye-candy', I captured some really interesting images of the temples built by the Chola dynasty. These temples are more than thousand years old and are truly an epitome of the excellent architecture and design. Even the small greenery-stricken hamlets within the vicinity of these temples add a lot of colour to the ambience.

A Tribute to a GOLU.

Five months ago, while I was engrossed purchasing vegetables from a vendor at the gate of my apartment, a hairy cream coloured, four-legged-freak, just a few months old caught my attention. There was something unusual about it. The forelegs were incredibly short and twisted and it was struggling to cross the road. The vegetable vendor whose mainstay was at the gate of my apartment carried it to the other end to avoid the reckless plethora of vehicles cruising on the road. As it wagged its tail as a token of thankgiving for the help he offered, I noticed the midget-like- structure of this entity. He probably was a mishmash of an alsatian and some mongrel.

He stood at the other end, easing himself and then with his pair of hindlegs, cleaned the droppings nonchalantly. At that instance, I observed that inspite of his handicap, he had a magical aura which I found missing in all the other roadside mongrels that loitered in and around my locality. As he finished peeing, he looked at us and quickly crossed the road, wagging his tail.

I quickly ran upstairs and had my mom prepare some milk for the new-comer, while I opened the biscuit dabba and pulled out a packet of rusks. Meanwhile the vegetable vendor and his wife fed him with a cream roll. As I poured milk into a green bowl, he quickly gulped it and began to lick my feet- That's when I realized, a world where hatred and jealousy have become synonymous with mankind, this innocent soul, unaware of the evils that exist in our society, offered me his friendship . As time elapsed I had begun to understand his mannersims. Being an early riser, I would carry milk ( My mom was never an animal lover, but Golu's innocent face had caught her attention and without complaining she would prepare milk for him.) and a few crunchy rusks at the early hours of dawn. He would jump with joy on seeing me.

He would never mix around unneccesarily with the oversized untidy brethren. He was disciplined, probably the rarest of the rare. At times in my absence, especially during noon, while I would be in office, my father would feed him and he would pull his kurta insisting to play with him. Soon everyone in the vicinity started pampering him, the chaiwallah, rickshawallah and the veggie vendor, all unaware of the incident that would leave us shocked.

April 1st- A day when close friends and the rest of the kith and kin play the game of fun, fooling one another. Destiny, that's what they say had decided to play a game of filth with me. As usual at 6:00 AM , I fed Golu with milk and rusks, patted him till he licked the last drop and then played with him for sometime, till I realized it was time for me to leave. As I began to retreat, he cuddled around my legs, licked my feet till I said, " Golu, I've to leave, enough of your antics, will meet you in the evening"-The evening that would never be the same for me ever again.

After a day's hectic schedule, I returned in the evening. I was all set to feed Golu when a journalist friend caught up with me and expressed interest on seeing my charming charismatic canine. As we reached the vegetable vendor's quadricycle, parked outside my apartment, the zest in that ambience seemed missing. An atmosphere of melancholy filled the air. The vegetable vendor's wife with a choked throat uttered the words of dismay," Golu khatam ho gaya, sahib". Ussey ek bus ne mara. Bus ka kona uss ke sar par laga aur bina cheenkhe-chillaye woh wahin mar gaya. Golu's death was instant, not a single drop of blood splattered from his body.

Golu suffered from an internal brain haemorrage.

I would like to end this right here, since my emotional outburst can't be explained nor defined. My mind is not in a state of shock, rather it's in a state of normalcy, still waiting for GOLU to come back...

He came from a magical world not so known,

Where friendship, love and loyalty are elements of renown.

Yet now, in his absence, my impatience doesn't seem to end,

What else can I say, he was indeed man's best friend.

My friends and I had set out to buy school books at Chandni Chowk. Mesmerized by the slim fabric and long curls of this lady, we start following, unaware of the bitter truth clandestined within. It's loosely based on an anecdote that I experienced when I had just taken admission in class X and had gone to Darya Ganj (A place in Delhi) to buy books.

My Fair Lady

On the streets of Chandni Chowk, walked a lovely lady.

Dressed was she in a green blouse and a charming red saree.

We three guys in our late teens, stood tall in the nearby shop,

Munching and chewing the crispy chips and a packet of corn-pop.

Whistling and singin', we sang the latest songs,

But, none of us knew in her something was really wrong.

Seeing her enchanting figure, we followed her everywhere.

For she was a unique source of beauty, whom we thought was really rare.

Her long black curls, decorated with jasmine, shone bright in the sun,

To be her husband would be so much fun.

Kids we would have produced as much as five,

For one tastes once, the sweetness of life.

The movement of her hips went to and fro,

Who she was is what we wanted to know?

One of us, brave of heart, tighly held her arm,

For all he wanted was, a glimpse of her charm.

Holding her arm tight, he proposed her to be his wife,

On turning back, she gave him the shock of his life.

Dumbfolded with our jaws dropping off, stood we three,

For the person whom we met was neither a he nor a she.

Lines in praise of life.

There is an element of fun in you,
That kicks off from my mind the gloom.
The smile you bestow on my face,
Fills my life with eternal grace.

The tell-tale aroma of love has cast such a spell,
That no one can measure or tell.
Even now I wander through the lanes of fantasy,
Stored in every nook and corner of my me-mo-ry.

Self Mockery

Nothing fascinates me more than a stroke of brush dipped in Indian ink that dexterously moves on a white sheet creating a delightful parade of humour in visual. Caricature mockery per se is not a form of art, it's an expression created by a caricature artist who mischeviously captures the movements and gestures of an individual and manipulates it with his tools intelligently. But first things first, a caricature artist should first understand his mirror image and then start experimenting.
